ESL 101: How to start teaching English Conversation

Hello everyone! Welcome or welcome back to my blog. Today, I will share with you private tutoring tips that I used for many years now. I've been teaching my two students since they were in elementary and until now that they're in high school.

Learning to speak English or any language requires consistent effort and patience. It needs a lot of practice. The teaching tools I used for English conversation were flashcards, a wheel of questions, and short videos that they needed to summarize into 3-5 sentences, they also answered questions based on each short video. Here are some questions to ask if you use short stories or short videos:

🦋 What is the title of the video?

🦋 What is the main topic and what did you understand?

🦋 What can you say about the story or the current events or the moral of the story?

🦋 Who are the main characters?

🦋 Who is the author or writer?

🦋 What is the setting of the story?

🦋 What is the issue or problem in the story?

🦋 What do you think is the best title of the story?

🦋 What is the moral lesson? How do you apply it in real life?

🦋 What do you think is the best ending of the story?

They can use their gadgets (iPad or mobile) to look up online vocabulary words that are being discussed. Or use Google Translate if they don't know how to say it in English. Although some of the words are poorly translated in English. I just have to guide them and explain the words in a way that they would easily understand.

Their favorite was the Wheel of Questions where they would spin a wheel and get a random question (of what ifs?) to answer and share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Example questions like:

🦋 What if everything you touched turned to chocolate? What will you do and why?

🦋 What if social media didn't exist? How would things be different?

🦋 What if you were the king of Thailand for a day? What laws would you implement?

🦋 What if you had superpowers? What would you do?

For those of you who want to teach private lessons, you may wanna consider Coffee shops like Cafe Amazon as your venue, because it’s cheap. You just need to order something to drink or any snack. I often order an iced cold cappuccino with a slice of cake.

I like it here for privacy reasons and it’s airconditioned. The staff here are polite they don’t bother you, it’s usually quiet and peaceful here so no worries.

IEP Open House 2023: Y6B Egyptian Theme

Here’s my super late post about our September 13, 2023, Open House. The majority of the parents came to watch their children present their projects for Social, Science, and Computer subjects.

The Open House was held in our very own classroom. Our theme was Egypt Two weeks before the show, I instructed my Year 6B students to make arts and crafts related to Egypt like the ones you see in the pictures.

This was the program of activities.

Group 1: Bridge, Tunnel, and the Mountain Model

Group 2: Maze made of feature board

Group 3: Water Wheel Model

Arts and crafts with the parents making a pyramid pop-up card.

If you wanna know how to make these arts and crafts please DM me for more information.

There were also other art projects that weren’t related to Egypt, but I thought maybe parents were interested to see them.

I love making miniatures so I made a 3d model of Egypt. The big picture in front of the class was painted by my previous students. She also made two (2) camels for me. I paid her less than 1,000 THB for her labor and materials. I know I'm not good at drawing or painting, it's not my cup of tea. I'm into arts and crafts. But my kids are good at drawing and sketching.

Students danced to the tune of Black Horse by Katy Perry. They were outstanding dancers. One of the best. This ends my blog so bye for now.
