London Street in Pattanakan Bangkok

Hello everyone!🤗

Welcome to my new blog about London Street here in Pattanakan Bangkok.

London Street at Pattanakarn Road is a Community Food Mall in Bangkok that replicates the atmosphere in the UK with its signature landmarks like Big Ben and other architectural features surrounding the building. It offers a variety of restaurants for shoppers to dine in while also providing different photo spots.

It was my first time, so I was quite curious about what was inside. We went to Le Petit, a coffee shop, and ordered pancakes with berries, whipped cream vanilla ice cream, and hot coffee. It took about 30-40 mins to serve so we chatted about the place and had our group pictures together while waiting for our orders. The coffee is so tasty and I love the pancakes.

Here are the food shops:

MK Restaurants
Yayoi Japanese Restaurants
Le Petit Restaurant - They serve desserts and beverages.
Le Siam Restaurant
Miyazaki

You can visit and check it out yourself. Here is their website and address to help you get there.

Plenary Indulgence: A Visit to War Cemeteries, in Kanchanaburi (A day trip to Kanchanaburi)

I'm a bit exhausted from our group trip to Kanchanaburi, last Sunday- 5th of November, 2023. I woke up at 4:30 AM to meet up with my friends at the bus stop in Ramkamhaeng 166. We hired a van it was so cheap. A total of 13 passengers were in the van from different schools. We usually see each other at St. Thomas Aquinas Church every Sunday. I don't personally know some of them, but they're co-teachers of our event organizer, Lannie.  Our meet-up time was at 5AM sharp, and I was late for 5 mins. The trip was around 3 1/2 hours from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, with less traffic in the morning and messy heavy traffic in the evening. Since we're already in Kanchanaburi, we had agreed to visit nearby tourist destinations that we don't get to see in Bangkok or on a daily basis. The last time I went was about 14 years ago with my Rex, I only had one child (Nikki), then😂 It was such a long time!

Here's our itinerary for a 1-day trip and a short history that you might be interested to know:

1. The Bridge on the River Kwai (Death Railway)

9:05-9:30AM

It's based on a movie and a novel with the same title (I don't remember the director or the author).  The Death Railway in a nutshell is a horrendous part of Thailand’s history that was created by the blood and sweat of WWII prisoners of war (POWs) and Asian slave laborers. In WWII, the Imperial Japanese Army had taken over South East Asia and accumulated tens of thousands of skilled and healthy prisoners of war, which were later used as laborers to support their war effort and one of the major projects that these POWs were funneled to work for was constructing a railway. These men, along with many other Asian laborers simply looking for work, were assigned to build the railway. It originated in Thailand and cut across to the Burmese war front to aid in the Japanese invasion of India. It was originally named the "Thailand-Burma Railway", it earned the nickname “Death Railway” because over one hundred thousand laborers died during its 16-month construction between 1942 and 1943. Once completed, it stretched 250 miles from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbuyuzayat, Burma. Many more died while remaining in the POW camps until 1945.

2. Beati Mundi Regina Catholic Church - 9:30-10:30AM

We attended a Thai mass since it's a Sunday obligation. It was amazing how Thais attended masses. I guess they're more cultured than us (no offense). As I have observed, kids stayed in their seats and did not run around anywhere; kids did not eat snacks; people were participative singing the songs with the choir; and they're very down to earth. No gadgets during the mass. After the mass, we had group pictures taken with the priest and nuns for souvenirs.

3. Jeath War Museum  at 10:30-11:00AM

There's a 60ThB entrance fee. The acronym JEATH stands for the primary nationalities involved in the construction of the railway: Japanese, English, Australian, American, Thai, and Holland, whereas the Thai name is Phíphítháphan Songkhram Wát Tâi (Wat Tai War Museum). It's not a big museum, so if you're in a hurry you may want to include this in your bucket list.

4. Street Markets at 11:00-11:40 AM

We took a side trip for pieces of jewelry (mostly stones, gems, and gold-plated items). The accessories are way cheaper than in Bangkok. Like, the ones that I bought only cost around 20-50ThB but in Bangkok, it's about 100-500ThB depending on the shop location and the packaging. But, to be honest, they just look the same quality as the other.

5. Floating Raft Restaurant (under the River Kwai) for Lunch at 11:40-12:40 PM

I only spent 260ThB on food and drinks. What we did was we ordered three kinds of food and split the bill into three people per group. We ordered the spring rolls, chicken cashew nuts stirfry, Tomyum Goong (shrimp), Thai milk tea, and coke. Then, we went around the area to show for gems, souvenir shirts, and other accessories. I bought bracelet gems and 1 gold plated bangle worth 680ThB (10 items).

6. World War Cemeteries   - 12:40-2:00PM

There's no entrance fee (free). We came here to pay respects to all the POW by offering flowers, lighting a candle, and most of all praying for their souls in purgatory so that they may have eternal rest. This is part of our main objective as we gathered to offer prayers for them.

- Kanchanaburi War Cemetery

The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is the main prisoner of war (POW) cemetery for victims of Japanese imprisonment while building the Burma Railway.

- Chungkai War Cemetery

Chung Kai War Cemetery is a war cemetery in Tha Ma Kham near Kanchanaburi, Thailand. Established in the 1950s, the cemetery hosts the graves of 1,426 British and 313 Dutch prisoners of war who died during World War II. It was originally a POV camp on the Burma Railway.

7. Wat Tham Khao Pun Cave  (Temple inside the cave) - 2:00-3:00PM

I paid 30ThB to visit the temple in the cave. It was creepy (sorry for the word) It's not dark nor hot inside the cave, it's just that I have a health problem, which I thought I could get over because I have company. I was wrong. I didn't pass through tiny passages inside because it was steep, small holes which I couldn't fit in (perhaps) or the smell of the bats' urine surrounding the area that I wouldn't be able to breathe. I had less oxygen as I went under it. I hurriedly ran back from the main entrance and threw up. Please don't get me wrong. It was my very first experience going to a cave, so please bear with me. It was beautiful from the entrance because of the striking colors of the lights. I saw the Buddha images, musical instruments, and ancient other tools. I have allergies so I couldn't bear it staying for a long time, let alone pass through the tiny cave tunnels. I witnessed the enchanted beauty of it through my friends' videos and pictures who went all the way through.

8. The Curve Cafe - 3:00-4:00 PM

After the Cave, we went straight to the Curve Cafe which is nearby. It has an overview of nature's beauty (the River Kwai, mountains, trees, birds, etc.) It's majestic and solemn. As I sipped my coffee, I felt more relaxed and I even wanna stay there for a long time. We had tons of group and self-portraits during our stay there (of course!😂). The place is so captivating and I hope to come back there soon with my family.

We were planning to visit the Glass Bridge and the Tiktok Dance at the viewpoint, but it was raining hard. So, we agreed to go home instead.  Inside the van, It was full, I couldn't stretch my legs and move freely. But, I understand that it's what I paid for lol! So how much is the total budget going there? It still depends on whether you'll travel alone or in group. Based on my experience, if you travel in a group, you'll save more money because you'll share expenses as a group. When you travel alone, probably it will cost you about 3,000-5,000ThB or more for hotel accommodation, transportation, shopping, entrance fees, etc.

Here below is my computation of my travel expenses to Kanchanaburi:

1. Transportation (Van)  - 500

2. Food - 390

     7-11 (Chips and Coffee) - 35

     Lunch (group) - 260

     Coffee - 95

3. Entrance Fees - 90

     JEATH War Museum - 60

     Cave - 30

4. Shopping - 680

Total Amount:  1,660😍

Kanchanaburi is indeed a place worth visiting. Please check Google to search for more places to visit in Kanchanaburi. We went to Erawan Falls and the Elephants World many years ago and this is just my second time. Can you imagine living and working here for 14 long years! I haven't visited the entire Thailand tourist destinations, this is so unbelievable! This is all for now. Thank you for dropping by and reading my long post. I will insert some photos and videos, too a little later. I still have to manage other things like TikTok and FB Reels. Until next time! See yah🤗😉

Ramkamhaeng 166's Cheap Thai Food

Hello everyone, Elektra here. I’d like to share with you our dinner last Saturday. It’s just a shop in front of the Little Alley on  Ramkamhaeng 166. The food is yummy and cheap.  If you happen to pass by Ramkamhaeng 164 or 166, you might like to drop by and dine in here. The food is more delicious, I guess and it’s cheaper. I usually bring my family and friends here because we actually have a good deal. I spent only 180B for 1 order of Tom Yum Goong, which is good for 2-3 people, and Shrimp Fried Rice, 3 soft drinks, and 3 plain Jasmine rice.

I’m sure you’ll love it here, especially if you’re on a tight budget traveling around Bangkok. They do serve hot meals upon order. I guess they also have grab food, but I don't even know the name of the shop because it's written in Thai😂

Bus 113 usually comes by from NASA Vegas Hotel or the Ramkamhaeng Airport Link. It costs about 9 Baht for the ordinary bus. I'll send you another Blog later! Bye😍

Book Review: The Parasitic Mind by Gad Saad

10 lessons from The Parasitic Mind: How Infectious Ideas Are Killing Common Sense by Gad Saad:

The Parasitic Mind is a book by Gad Saad that exposes the dangers of the "parasitic mind" - a mind that is easily influenced by false information, groupthink, and other cognitive biases.

The book shares insights into the psychology of the parasitic mind and offers strategies for protecting ourselves from its influence. Here are the ten (10) lessons from this book.

1. Beware of the idea pathogens. Idea pathogens are ideas that are harmful to our minds and society. They can be spread through social media, the news, and even our own friends and family. These days we couldn't say that everything we've watched on the news or what is on social media is valid and true.

2. Don't be afraid to question authority. Just because someone is in a position of power doesn't mean they're always right. Be willing to challenge the status quo and think for yourself. Think outside of the box, and engage in sensible conversation.

3. Beware of groupthink. Groupthink is when people in a group make decisions that are not in their best interests because they want to fit in. Be willing to speak up and disagree with the group if you think they're wrong. Agree to disagree but be humble.

4. Beware of echo chambers. Echo chambers are online communities where people only hear information that confirms their existing beliefs. This can lead to people becoming more extreme in their views and less open to new ideas.

5. Beware of confirmation bias. Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek out information that confirms our existing beliefs and ignore information that contradicts them. This can lead us to make bad decisions and believe things that aren't true.

6. Beware of the backfire effect. The backfire effect is when people become more entrenched in their beliefs when they're presented with evidence that contradicts them. This can happen because people don't like to be wrong, and they may feel like they have to defend their beliefs in order to save face.

7. Beware of the Dunning-Kruger effect. The Dunning-Kruger effect is when people who are incompetent at something overestimate their abilities. This can lead them to make bad decisions and believe things that aren't true.

8. Beware of the availability heuristic. The availability heuristic is a mental shortcut that we use to make decisions based on the information that is most easily available to us. This can lead us to make bad decisions because we may not be considering all of the relevant information.

9. Beware of the anchoring effect. The anchoring effect is when our judgment is influenced by the first piece of information we're given. This can lead us to make bad decisions because we may not be considering all of the relevant information.

10. Beware of the sunk cost fallacy. The sunk cost fallacy is when we continue to invest in something, even when it's clear that it's a bad investment because we don't want to admit that we've made a mistake. Even if it's a hard pill to swallow. This can lead us to lose even more money in the long run.

The word "expert" can be subjective, and self-censorship is a threat to freedom of speech. Saad mentioned in his book that many people claimed to be experts, intellectual leaders, and activists (as described by the authorities) or social justice warriors. As a result, no matter how qualified someone's credentials may be, we do service when we question. We must not control ourselves to use our intelligence and reason in search of understanding the truth.

My Dental Crown and Mother's Day Celebration 2023

I woke in the morning with a positive mindset because it was my dental appointment at 11AM, at Chatuchak Dental Clinic in Phahayothin somewhere in Saphan Kwai (downtown) for my coronation (dental crown aka jacket crown😂). I had my fitting last week, and I paid 12,000 ThB from Daddy. I had breakfast and decided to wake up my second child to accompany me to the dentist. I found the DIY  Mother's Day cards on the table with some cash inserted inside. Those were sweet gestures of love

We took a cab from the top of the road to Latkrabang Station (Airport link) which cost 160B, and the train cost 40B for each passenger to Phaya Thai (N2) Station interchange with the BTS Skytrain going to N7- Saphan Kwai costs 35B each. The total fare was 310ThB.

After the dentist, we decided to go to Fashion. I wanted to try Bus 8 (non-air) which only costs 8B each, going to Happy Land near the Mall Bangkapi in Ladprao. Then, a taxi to the Fashion Mall costs 60B. I messaged my two girls at home to come and dine with us, I was told to eat after an hour so the dental cement would stick well with the tooth and the crown. My eldest drove our car to Fashion.

It was passed 1pm when we arrived and the place was packed with families. I wasn't surprised at all. I should've just decided to celebrate it the following day. It was my fault for insisting on going there since we were already out.

We dined at MK, and we came in at 2pm for a very late lunch. We had the shabu set worth 399 ThB and ordered braised beef with rice for Nicole and me. Sofia ordered the yakisoba noodles. Since Samantha is not a picky eater, I ordered plain rice for her because she only likes soup and meat (shabu set). We loved the savory taste of the soup. We all ordered the refillable iced lemon tea. The bill costs 1,018 ThB only.

There's a free Mother's Day picture for us from MK

Then, we went to Siam Relax for an hour of Thai massage. It's located at Ramkamhaeng 166 in front of the gold shop. I usually go for a massage once a week, and it is always Saturday (my self-care day). We had the neck, shoulders, and back massage which cost 300B per person for 1 hour (not too pricy). I didn't wanna go upstairs (on the 3rd floor) because I don't really like lying down. I preferred to have it done on the couch. I loved the service so I gave a 50ThB tip. It was relaxing and refreshing, the pain was gone.

After the massage, we were a little hungry so we went to our favorite cafe & restaurant - Chon Latee. It is located a few steps away from Siam Relax. I'm a frequent customer here. We ordered the following:

Me - honey croffle & capuccino

Nicole - ham and egg club sandwich & matcha green tea

Sofia - carbonara & mint + milk drink

Samantha - fries & oreo milkshake + plain cheesy pizza

I used my discount coupon with 7 previous stamps (order 9 drinks, free 1 drink) so I had one drink for free. The total cost was only 1.040 ThB.  Overall, it was indeed a happy Mother's Day! The objectives were met, and I spent time for family bonding, self-care, and dining out with my favorite people. Thanks be to God for all the blessings - big or small.
